FIEL Ministry

Adopt-a Pastor-Project

In the summer of 2005, I had the opportunity to teach and preach in Brazil (the Rio de Janero area). We have a church plant there through the ministry of Kevin Millard. Kevin helped to organize a Reformation Conference on the “solas” with the help of two other pastors in the Niterio area. Pastor Phil Newton, Pastor Paul Stith, and I taught at this conference.

On the way home, we had a lay-over in Sao Paulo. During that time, we were able to meet with Richard Denham, founder of Editora FIEL, a non-profit Brazilian organization. Pastor Richard has been on the mission field for over 50 years, and the ministry of FIEL is primarily concerned with equipping the Brazilian pastors to teach the word of God to their people. FIEL is publishing some great books in Portuguese in the tradition of the Reformation:

John Murray- Commentary on Romans

John Bunyan- Pilgrim's Progress

A. W. Pink- Sovereignty of God

John L. Dagg- Manual of Theology

John MacArthur- Ashamed of the Gospel

John MacArthur- The Gospel According to Jesus

Martyn Lloyd-Jones- Preaching and Preachers

Martyn Lloyd-Jones- Studies on the Sermon on the Mount

J. C. Ryle- Expository Thoughts on the Gospels (4 vols.)

And many other books that I cannot list here. You can check out their web-site for more information: Editora Fiel.

FIEL is doing many things for the Portuguese-speaking world. Along with their publishing ministry, FIEL holds annual conferences in Brazil, Portugal, and Mozambique, hoping to expand that to other Portuguese-speaking areas. One of the most exciting ministries is their Adopt-a-Pastor-Project.

The Adopt-a-Pastor-Project has ministered to more than 400 pastors over the past seven years. this project allows individuals or churches to provide a pastor with a book a month, a copy of the quarterly magazine “Faith for Today,” and the cost of attending the annual FIEL conference in his home country. There are approximately 200 pastors on the waiting list, so this is an urgent ministry to pastors who desperately desire the tools to teach their people. What an open door lies before us!

If you are interested in helping in this project, you are given the option of helping a pastor in Brazil, Portugal, Mozambique or Angola. You will receive a photo of the adopted pastor. You pastor will also be encouraged to send letters to FIEL for his supporter, and FIEL translates the letters and sends them to you. You are encouraged to write to the pastor you are helping, and you will receive a monthly News Report of the ministry. Many of the pastors are deeply moved to think that someone they have never met is truly concerned about their ministry.

Although many national pastors have daily material needs, FIEL discourages the giving of money to meet these needs. Giving funds to meet daily needs has proven to create an unhealthy dependence upon foreign help. Medical emergencies are an exception to this rule.
